Letter from Tate!

To our Members,

The Club appreciates your continued support during these challenging times.  Last year I wrote to everyone how the Club was not immune to the economic climate and that I would be postponing the rate increase for 2009.   I can honestly say that 2009 was the most challenging year since our inception.  That being said, we made the necessary adjustments to sustain our long term feasibility without sacrificing our quality experience.

Over the last year and a half, I have met with many other health club owners, and we all have experienced the same trends; trends that we have not seen before.  I feel fortunate that the Club has a very solid core membership, but sadly this economic climate has resulted in many people having to cancel their membership due to their financial duress, or to relocate to other areas.  Since I am very aware of the stress reduction exercise provides, I have assisted many members with their monthly dues as a result of their hardship.   I have also continued to try to support the numerous worthy causes in Sisters, albeit at a lesser sponsorship level than previous years.

I take a lot into consideration when raising the rates because I understand how it impacts the members as well as the Club both positively and negatively.   While many health clubs raise their rates annually, it has been over three years since I have raised the dues.   I need to do it now in order to keep the high quality staff and atmosphere with all the amenities, services and classes that you have come to expect.

Over the 3 years since the last dues increase we have:

  • Completed a $350,000 expansion/remodel.
    • New strength and cardio equipment as well as  the new 2600 square foot cardio room
  • Updated the Locker Rooms and updated mechanical equipment throughout the Club
  • Secured land for future tennis/racquetball courts.
  • Expanded our hours of operation and our class schedule.
  • “Greened” up the Club through new appliances and policies
  • Joined Fitlife that allows you to travel to other health clubs at no charge.

In lieu of the 2009 rate increase, I imposed the following this past year:

  • A spending freeze on all but the essential items.
  • A reduction in my own compensation
  • Imposed a pay freeze for the staff.
  • Reduced staff and staff hours.

The new monthly rates when paid by EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) are:

$48.00 for a Student (old rate was $45.00)

$71.00 for a Single (old rate was $65.00)

                $99.00 for a Couple (old rate was$92.00)

$117.00 for a Family (old rate was $109)

While the rate increase will take effect in January for any new members, you as an existing member will not see the increase until the February 15th payment.  While I don’t typically offer a discount for those that pay a year in advance, I will allow you to “Down Your Dues” and lock in the lower rates if you would like to pay for the remaining year in full.  For those that participated in last year’s Commit to Get Fit program, I will allow you to pay the remaining months at the current rate if you choose to pay them in full as well.

In closing, the Club has a very solid foundation and we are positioned well for the future.  I want to ensure its long term viability in addition to the continued sustainability of Sisters and Central Oregon.  Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Appreciably,

Tate Metcalf

Trevor Williams

Trevor Williams joined the Sisters Athletic Club team about a year ago.  He has helped many people by teaching Masters Swim, which focuses on form and function of strokes.  He also teaches private swim lessons as well as coaches many students that are involved in the swim club (levels 2 and 3).

Trevor grew up in Irvine, CA and Battleground, WA.  He currently resides in Sisters with his two beautiful children Ezra (8) and Zimri (6).  Because of his two little kids, he strives to be the best Dad that he can.  His greatest joy is knowing that his kids believe in him, and thinks he is the #1 Dad of all.  Trevor attended Clark County Community College where he got his AA.  He is currently in his 8th period apprenticeship for plumbing, in hopes to becoming a journeyman soon.

Years ago, Trevor’s leg was crushed by a forklift.  He had nine surgeries to help heal it.  He was in a wheel chair for 3 months and had a therapist suggest that he should be a coach…and that’s exactly what he did.  With the help of his kids inspiring him to get better and the inspiration of his therapist, Trevor currently coaches U6 and U10 soccer teams, U16 girl’s volleyball and is the club coach for swimming at Sisters Athletic Club.

Trevor’s love for swimming has inspired him to achieve a new goal; to become a instructor trainer in CPR, AED, First Aid, Lifeguard training and Water Safety through the American Red Cross.  We wish you well in this endeavor.

Finally, when Trevor isn’t at SAC, and not coaching, he is working at many of his other jobs.  He also might be playing adult club volleyball and/or soccer.

SAC Weight Loss Program

Posted on January 4th, 2010 in Club News | Comments Off

This program is designed to help jump start your weight loss efforts.  Whether you are looking to lose 10lbs, 100lbs, or somewhere in between, this progam can get you started on the right track.  For 6 weeks you will be held accountable for your diet and exercise habits.

You will receive 6 personal training sessions; one per week.  There you will turn in your weekly food journal and exercise log, as well as get a great personalized workout with your trainer, Bridget.  We will be conducting both body and exercise assessments during the first and last sessions including: weighing, body measurements, body fat analysis, blood pressure and various strength tests.

Also once a week on Tuesdays at noon, we will meet together in our private group exercise class to workout and learn new exercise techniques.  There you will have time to ask questions and hopefully get extra motivation from other participants in the class.  Our first class meeting will have guest speaker, Registered Dietician Lori Brizee.  She will talk about proper eating and nutrition.  She will also leave time for inidividual questions if you need more advice.

This is a great way to start off 2010 and help many of you with your New Year’s resolutions!  Since this program is so individualized we only have room for 10 people so don’t wait to sign-up!

Bridget will be holding an orientation meeting on Tuesday, January 12th at 6:00 pm to answer questions.  At this time, you will receive your personalized Weight Loss Program folders.

Please call the front desk if you have any questions 549-6878.

Karyn Lynch

Karyn was born and raised in Portland, Oregon.  She is married to Dr. Ted Lynch, an Orthodontist and Pediatric Dentist in Sisters and Bend.  She is the mother of Cinnamin (38), Michael (35), Tyler (33) and the grandmother to Austin (15) and Johnathan (16).  In addition to her family is Buddy (13) a chocolate-chesapeake labrador retriever and Toby (23) a yellow-napped amazon parrot.

She began skating at age 6 and entered her first competition at age 8.  Her events were pairs skating, artistic skating and dance.  She became the Regional Champion in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 and National Champion in 1962.  In later years she turned professional and taught competitive skaters as well as her own children.

After graduating from high school she became an airline flight attendant for Continental Airlines based out of Los Angeles, then later transferred to the Seattle base.  During her years with the airlines she flew government chartered MAC flights (Military Airlift Command) for the Vietnam War.

Once retired from flying she was married and began her family.  Having been an athlete all of her life and with a background in modern dance and ballet she was drawn to the new craze of aerobic exercise.  She opened three studios in the Milwaukie area and hired instructors as well as herself to teach classes.  She also freelanced and taught at the Bo Jackson Fitness Center at Nike World Campus, Beaverton, Multnomah Athletic Club, Riverplace Athletic, Western Athletic, Gold’s Gym, Natilus and was the creator of an Obese Program for Providence Hospital in Portland.  Then in 1982 she and Ted moved to Bend where for seven years she was the Group Fitness Director at the Athletic Club of Bend.

While teaching in Bend she was asked to apply for the Winter Games in St. Petersburg, Russia along with other applicants from various countries to train Russian aerobic instructors.  The Russian Federation responded and they selected her to teach an intensive course for one week.  She and her husband traveled to St. Petersburg and were amazed by the VIP treatment as well as the turnout of eager instructors from as far away as Siberia.  Ask Karyn, this was the highlight of her fitness career.

She is certified in step, slide, dance, Zumba, NIA (neuromuscular integrative action), and body pump.  Her continued philosophy is, “TO FIND THE JOY—EXERCISE SHOULD BE FUN!”  Her goal is to provide a safe, fun and challenging class that appeals to all fitness levels, and that everyone leaves happy and energized.

Karyn is also the office manager for her husbands orthodontic practices.  She is also the acting president for the Oregon Dental Executives Association based out of Portland with chapters in Bend, Salem, Eugene and Roseburg.  The organization is dedicated to excellence in the management of dental practices and provides continuing education programs and motivational speakers to it’s members and the community at large.

Other than the love of her family, she and Ted are obsessed sailors.  They have a sailboat at Tomahawk Island on the Columbia River in Portland and try to get out as much as they can, which is never enough.  For quick trips they have a day sailor that can be easily transported to various lakes in Central Oregon.  They both were bareboat licensed in Florida and San Diego, where they have done most of their sailing.

When at home she loves to garden. She finds it good for the soul!!!  Other activities include walking, biking, canoeing, sculling, bowling, tennis and skiing.  However her absolute obsession is walking the beaches (anywhere) and shelling.  She says there’s just something about finding the beautiful little treasures the sea leaves behind.

To Sisters Members and Staff—I would like to thank all of you who have enriched my life.  Teaching here at SAC is an honor.  I have truly appreciated everyone’s support from day one.  As members you all know that you have something special with this club and having taught for over 30 years, I know you do!  A special thanks to Tate who kept at me to come teach for you.  I have enjoyed every minute.  HERE’S LOOKING AT 2010, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  IN FITNESS WE BELIEVE!
